Hide and Shoe

So I was able to fit all of our clothes into one (1) closet, but clearly there was no room for our shoes. Eventually, I would like to replace the folding doors with two (2) french style doors, which would give me some overdoor shoe storage options, but that's not a priority right now.

So where to the put the shoes? Under the bed of course!

1st- We had to get some risers. I've always wanted the bed a little higher and until we get a fancier bed, risers were the perfect solution. We got this Mahogany Wood set from Bed, Bath, and Beyond. As you can see in the picture, the great thing about these is you can stack them.
2nd-
Storage baskets. During the move, I made several trips to Target and saw lots of different options for storage baskets. The ones I got look like this- (I couldn't find the exact ones online.)

These were on sale for $17, which was more than I wanted to spend, but I liked the way they looked the best. They only had (4) in stock. We found even cheaper ones at Lowes for $8. We got (4) in brown. I didn't like the look as much, but figured I had spent enough and most guests would never see Ryan's side of the bed. So, we were able to fit (3) on each side and (2) at the end of the bed, (8) total. And all of our shoes fit perfectly! They slide easily on the wood floor, and they even match the bedroom decor.

I have the baskets organized by type- boots, pumps, flats, sandals, sneakers. Obviously, you can move the baskets wherever you want. So for now I have boots in the #1 spot, but come Spring/Summer, I'll move the sandals basket up to the front. For me, this system is great. I never really liked putting my shoes away in any of my previous closets. Whether it was over-the-door, on a shelf, or even the floor, I always had to line the shoes up or they just piled up. No more lining up! Just throw them in the appropriate basket and slide under the bed. Done and done. For small spaces, I think underbed storage is the most underutilized space. Instead of just throwing stuff underneath the bed, try organizing it and making it more usable. Even if its just for actual storage, invest in some Store-n-Slide Underbed Boxes for clothes, shoes, linens, towels, etc.. Other options: Underbed Drawers or even an underbed Wrapping Paper Organizer.

Good luck and happy organizing!

Next week preview- a spice rack that attracts.
